In regards to dogs, German speakers will use the pronoun "er' (he) if the gender of the dog is not known to them.
REMEMBER: The capitalized "Sie" is used to address one or more person(s) formally in German, while the lower case "sie" is used when referring to one female ("she") or when referring to several people ("they").
