Did you know German speakers have more than one way of saying "you?"
FORMAL "YOU" -or- "YOU ALL"
When German speakers first meet one or several adult(s), or when they communicate with people of high authority or people, they highly respect, they use the FORMAL pronoun, "Sie," "Ihr," or "Ihnen"
For example: "Wie heißen Sie?" (What are you called?)
For example:: Das ist Ihr Hund, President, Obama!" (This is your dog, President, Obama.)
For example:: Wie geht es Ihnen? (How are you?)
INFORMAL "YOU"
One Person
When asking one child, one family member, one friend, or any adult in a casual way, "What are you called?" German speakers use the INFORMAL singular pronouns, "du."
For example: "Wie heißt du?"
When asking one child, one family member, one friend, or any adult in a casual way, "How are you?" German speakers use the INFORMAL singular pronouns, "dir."
For example: "Wie geht es dir?"
When telling one child, one family member, one friend, or any adult, "It's nice to meet you!" German speakers use the INFORMAL singular pronouns "dich." For example:"Es ist nett dich kennen zu lernen!").
INFORMAL "YOU"
Several Persons
When asking several children or several adults "What are you called?" in a casual way, German speakers use the INFORMAL plural pronoun "ihr" which is like saying "you all." For example: "Wie heißtihr?" However, when asking several children or several adults, "How are you?" in a casual way, German speakers use the INFORMAL plural pronoun, "euch."
For example: "Wie geht es euch?"
Please note:
1. The formal pronoun "Sie" is always capitalized.
2. The capitalized, formal pronoun, "Sie" stands for "you" when speaking to one or several persons.
3. The lower case "sie" can stand for "she" or "they."
